Astrantia major ‘Shaggy’ is a distinctive perennial known for its large, star-like white flowerheads surrounded by long, pointed bracts with green-tipped edges, creating a slightly “shaggy” look. The airy, textured blooms add an elegant, natural feel to cottage gardens, woodland-style borders, and meadow-inspired plantings. It is also excellent for cutting, bringing long-lasting structure and a soft, sophisticated accent to bouquets. This variety is ideal when you want a pollinator-friendly plant with a unique form and a long flowering season.
The plant grows to a height of 50–70 cm (20–28 inches) and produces small, detailed flowers with a diameter of 0–5 cm. Its green-tinted white blooms, held on slender stems above a neat clump of fresh green foliage, are ideal for mid-border planting, partial-shade beds, and naturalistic combinations. ‘Shaggy’ performs best in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, and removing spent flower stems can help extend the display.
