Product Description - Allium Ampeloprasum
Allium ampeloprasum (Allium ampeloprasum var. ampeloprasum) is the ancient, vigorous wild species native to the Mediterranean and Middle East that gave rise to elephant garlic, perennial leeks, pearl onions and kurrat. It is celebrated for its tall, dramatic scapes topped with large, spherical umbels of 100–300 pale lilac-pink to deep rose-pink flowers that open into an airy, shimmering globe 10–15 cm across, holding their colour perfectly for 4–6 weeks and attracting bees from miles around.
The plant forms thick, upright grey-green stems growing to a height of 100–180 cm (3–6 ft) with a spread of 30–50 cm spread. The broad, strap-like leaves are edible and have a mild garlic flavour. Ideal as an ornamental-edible in cottage gardens, herb beds, or wildlife borders; the flower heads are excellent for fresh or dried arrangements.
