How to Plant - Allium Triquetrum
Planting & Care Instructions
Ornamental alliums are hardy, low-maintenance perennial bulbs valued for their distinctive flower heads. They are ideal for borders, flower beds, pots and cut flowers. Planting depth and spacing should be adjusted according to the size of the bulb.
- Planting time: Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, before the ground becomes deeply frozen. Most ornamental alliums flower from May to June, depending on the variety and local climate.
- Position & soil: Choose a position in full sun. Plant in loose, well-drained soil and avoid areas where water tends to collect.
- Planting depth & spacing: Place the bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards. For standard alliums, size 12/14 cm, plant approximately 10–20 cm deep and 15–30 cm apart. For giant alliums, size 18/20 cm, plant approximately 15–20 cm deep and 25–30 cm apart. For small alliums, size 5+ cm, plant approximately 5–10 cm deep and 7.5–10 cm apart.
- Watering: Water once after planting to settle the soil. During active growth, water when necessary if conditions are dry, but avoid waterlogging.
- Growing in containers: Use pots with drainage holes and a well-drained potting mix. Larger alliums require deeper and more spacious containers, while smaller varieties are well suited to compact pots and mixed plantings.
- After flowering: Allow the foliage to turn yellow and die back naturally before removing it. Faded flower heads can be removed or left in place for their decorative appearance.
- Returning each year: Most ornamental alliums are winter-hardy perennials and can return and multiply for many years when planted in suitable, well-drained conditions.
