Product Description - Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) Amarossi
Transform your indoor space with the striking Amaryllis (Hippeastrum), a tender bulb known for its spectacular winter and spring blooms. These popular plants are considered moderately easy to grow, making them a perfect choice for bringing color into your home during the cooler months.
Key Growing Facts
- Botanical Name: Hippeastrum species and cultivars.
- Flowering Season: Blooms typically appear in winter and spring.
- Height & Spread: Plants reach heights of 25–90 cm (10 inches to 3 feet) with a spread of approximately 30 cm (12 inches).
- Planting Window: For the best results, plant your bulbs between October and January.
Expert Planting & Aftercare
Plant your bulbs in a pot slightly larger than the bulb with peat-free John Innes No.2 or multipurpose compost. Keep two-thirds of the bulb above the soil surface and place it in a well-lit location at 21°C (70°F).
Maintenance & Extending Blooms
- Maintenance: Water sparingly until new leaves emerge, then transition to regular watering. Regularly rotate the pot to ensure straight growth, and stake larger cultivars if necessary.
- Extending Blooms: Once the plant is in flower, moving it to a cooler location (15–18°C / 60–65°F) will help prolong the display.
- Dormancy: After flowering, you can induce semi-dormancy by reducing water and keeping the plant in a cooler, well-lit position (around 13°C / 55°F) for eight to ten weeks before restarting the cycle.
Propagation
- Bulb Offsets: The most effective way to produce a flowering bulb identical to the parent is by separating bulb offsets during repotting (January to March).
- Seeds: While possible, growing from seed requires patience, as plants can take up to six years to reach maturity and may not look exactly like the parent plant.

How to Plant - Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) Amarossi
Planting & Care Instructions
Amaryllis are stunning indoor-flowering bulbs ideal for indoor pots and as gorgeous cut flowers. They are easy to grow, produce long-lasting blooms, and feature a reusable bulb that can return and flower again when cared for properly.
- Planting time: Plant the bulbs indoors from October to February. For best growth, place the pot in a warm room (20–25 °C). Amaryllis generally bloom from December to April, depending on the exact planting time.
- Position & soil: Choose a position that receives bright, indirect light. Plant the bulb in a rich, well-drained potting mix.
- Planting depth: Place the bulb with the pointed end facing upwards. Plant shallowly so that the bulb is halfway above the soil surface.
- Watering: Keep the soil slightly moist once active growth begins, but strictly avoid overwatering to prevent the bulb from rotting.
- Growing in containers: Use indoor pots with proper drainage holes. Amaryllis prefer to be somewhat root-bound, so choose a pot that leaves just a few centimeters of space between the bulb and the edge of the pot.
- After flowering: Remove faded flowers, but leave the foliage in place. Continue watering and providing bright light so the bulb can store energy for the following season.
- Returning each year: Because it is a reusable bulb, the Amaryllis can multiply or return to flower in subsequent years when left in suitable conditions and allowed a proper dormancy period.
