Product Description - Babiana stricta
Babiana Stricta is a relative of freesia, saffron and iris. It has a pleasant, delicate and distinctive scent. It reaches a height of 25cm. It is quite a compact plant, its leaves are similar to those of the gladiolus, the only difference being that the babiana leaves are covered with soft fuzz. The flowers of this plant are very colourful, mainly purple or magenta.
It can be propagated by tubers as well as seeds. The bulbs of this plant are stored in peat at +5°C +10°C in a dry, dark room. Plant in well-drained soil in April or May at a depth of up to 7 cm and a distance of not less than 10 cm.
Flowering begins when the time of year is right, in August or early September, and lasts for three to four weeks. Regular watering is required during the growing season, but avoid stagnant moisture and overwatering.
In nature, Stricta babiana grows in the Cape Mountains, mostly on stony, sunny slopes. It looks very pretty planted as a group against a backdrop of coniferous shrubs and rocks.

How to Plant - Babiana stricta
Guide and tips for planting Gladiolus bulbs

Choose the planting location: Gladiolus bulbs prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Avoid planting in areas with standing water or where the soil remains soggy after rainfall.

Prepare the soil: Loosen the soil and remove any weeds or debris from the planting area. Amend the soil with compost or organic matter to improve the soil's fertility and drainage.

Plant the bulbs: Dig a hole that is about 8-12 cm deep and place the Gladiolus bulb with the pointed end facing up. Space the bulbs about 12-24 cm apart.

Cover the bulbs: Cover the Gladiolus bulbs with soil and gently press down to remove air pockets. Make sure the soil level is even with the surrounding soil.

Water the bulbs: Give the bulbs a thorough watering after planting to settle the soil around them. Gladiolus bulbs prefer consistently moist soil, so water them regularly, but avoid over-watering as this can cause rot.

Stake the plants: Gladiolus plants can grow tall and may need to be staked for support. Insert stakes into the ground near the bulbs before they start growing to avoid damaging the plant later on.

Monitor the bulbs: Gladiolus bulbs typically take about 2-3 weeks to emerge from the soil, so be patient. Once they emerge, water and fertilize regularly to encourage healthy growth. Gladiolus plants can bloom in mid to late summer and may require occasional fertilization throughout the growing season.
