Product Description - Black Currant Tisel
Black Currant 'Tisel' (Ribes nigrum) is a high-yielding, early-ripening cultivar developed in Poland at the Research Institute of Pomology in Skierniewice, prized for its large, glossy black berries with a rich, tangy-sweet flavor. Ideal for fresh eating, juicing, jams, or freezing, the berries are packed with vitamin C, anthocyanins, and antioxidants. The compact, upright shrub features dark green, lobed foliage and is valued for its strong resistance to powdery mildew, leaf spots, and white pine blister rust, making it a low-maintenance choice.
Growing to a height of 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) with a spread of 90–120 cm (3–4 feet), 'Tisel' produces fruit in early summer (late June to early July). Perfect for small gardens, hedges, or containers, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0–6.5). Self-fertile and suitable for mechanical harvesting, it’s hardy in USDA Zones 3–7. Netting is recommended to protect berries from birds.
