Product Description - Blueberry Toro
Blueberry 'Toro' (Vaccinium corymbosum) is a standout Northern Highbush cultivar renowned for its large, firm, sky-blue berries that offer a sweet, never-tart flavor, perfect for fresh eating, baking, or preserves. Introduced by the USDA in 1987, its heavy clusters of juicy berries, rich in antioxidants and vitamins, hang like grapes, making harvesting a breeze. The upright shrub boasts bronze spring foliage, hot pink to white bell-shaped flowers, and fiery red fall foliage, adding year-round ornamental appeal.
This variety grows to a height of 120–180 cm (4–6 feet) with a spread of 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) and produces fruit from June to August. Ideal for edible hedges, containers, or ornamental borders, 'Toro' thrives in full sun and acidic, well-drained soil (pH 4.5–5.5). Self-fertile but benefits from cross-pollination with varieties like 'Bluecrop' for larger yields, it requires 800–1000 chill hours and is hardy in USDA Zones 4–7. Moderately resistant to pests, netting is advised to protect berries from birds.
