It is a perennial ephemeral plant that belongs to the Cockscomb family. Other names for the species include Tommasini saffron, Neapolitan saffron, and Tomasini crocus. This is one of the cold-resistant crocuses! It thrives in the wild in Hungary and the Balkan Peninsula. This crocus blooms in late winter - early spring for 3-4 weeks (and in May it begins a dormant period).

Appearance

This plant is often called "Snow Crocus" for obvious reasons. It blooms well before the Dutch hybrids awaken. Therefore, you can admire the long flowering of crocuses if you plant them both. The petals are narrow, pointed. The perianth tube is light, short, vertical, stalk-like. The leaves are shiny, narrow, dark green, about 7 cm long. They begin to grow from the bulb during flowering and fully develop after flowering. The bulbs are oblong-spherical, slightly flattened. They usually produce 3 flowers each.

It is suitable for mass planting on lawns, under trees, in rock gardens or for creating compositions in containers.
