Crocus Whitewell Purple
Crocus Whitewell Purple - flower bulbs and perennial plants from Holland
Product Description - Crocus Whitewell Purple
Crocus tommasinianus 'Whitewell Purple'. New! This variety differs from others in its spectacular flowers and early flowering. It was bred in the last century, in 1933. But it is still very popular. In addition, it is the earliest crocus. It blooms two weeks earlier than its counterparts - large-flowered crocuses. If planted in autumn this year, it will greet you in early spring with wonderful colours.
Excellent characteristics:
- Crocus Whitewell Purple (Whitewell Purple) belongs to the group of botanical crocuses.
- The rich reddish-purple colour with a pale centre and golden-orange anthers captivates with its beauty.
- It grows up to 10 cm in height.
- It blooms early, like all wild crocuses, in February-March.
- It has graceful six-petalled flowers that open and close on sunny days.
- When they are wide open, they take on a star-shaped shape.
- The petals are narrow, pointed.
- The perianth tube is light.
- The size of the flower is about 5 cm in diameter.
- The leaves are shiny, narrow, dark green, about 7 cm long. They begin to grow from the bulb during flowering and fully develop after flowering.
- The bulbs are oblong-spherical, slightly flattened.
- They usually produce 3 buds each.
- Flowering is long: 20 days.
- This plant is hardy: it does not require shelter for the winter.
- Propagated by dividing the overgrown nests of corms in the autumn.
Tomasini saffron or Tomasini crocus blooms well before the Dutch hybrids awaken. This plant is often called "Snow Crocus" for obvious reasons. It is a perennial ephemeral plant and belongs to the Cockscomb family. Other names for the species include Tommasini saffron, Neapolitan saffron, and Neapolitan crocus. This is one of the most cold-resistant crocuses! It thrives in the wild in Hungary and the Balkan Peninsula. This crocus blooms in late winter - early spring for 3-4 weeks (and in May it begins a dormant period).
Crocus Whitewell Purple requires spring sun to accumulate enough food and form a new flower by autumn. Once the foliage is mature, shade is not a problem for the plant, so choose your crocus companions carefully.

How to Plant - Crocus Whitewell Purple
Guide and tips for planting Iris Perennials Bare-Root Plants
-
Prepare the soil: Iris plants prefer well-drained soil with a pH level of 6.0 to 7.0. Amend the soil with compost or organic matter to improve the soil's fertility and drainage.
-
Choose the planting location: Select a spot that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Avoid planting in areas with standing water or where the soil remains soggy after rainfall.
-
Dig a hole: Dig a hole deep enough to accommodate the roots of the plant. The hole should be shallow, only about 4 cm deep, and wide enough to spread the roots out.
-
Place the bare-root plant in the hole: Gently spread the roots out and place the plant in the hole. The top of the rhizome, the thickened root-like stem, should be visible above the soil surface. Backfill the hole with soil and press down firmly to eliminate air pockets.
-
Water the plant: Give the plant a thorough watering after planting to settle the soil around the roots. Continue to water the plant regularly to keep the soil evenly moist until the plant becomes established.
-
Mulch the plant: Add a layer of organic mulch around the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the base of the plant to prevent rot.
-
Monitor the plant: Keep an eye on the plant's growth and water it regularly as needed. Iris plants generally bloom in late spring to early summer and benefit from occasional fertilization throughout the growing season.
