Product Description - Dahlia Avignon

Dahlia Avignon

Dahlia Avignon (Decorative Dahlia 'Avignon', Dahlia hybrida cultivar). New! This colourful dahlia can add colour and interest to any garden. It belongs to the group of Decorative Dahlias (group 5). It is a tall variety. Like all dahlias, this variety is ideal for beginners. It will also be a great addition to any bouquet and flower arrangement. You will definitely like its basket-shaped inflorescences in shades of white (main colour), purple and wine (stripes). The centre is a lemon shade. The inflorescences look very impressive against the background of green foliage. They are completely double, large in size (Large), from 20 to 25 cm in diameter. The inflorescences consist of reed and tubular flowers. Reed flowers are large and flat. They are sharp, slightly twisted, bent towards the stem and spread in all directions from the middle of the flower. Tubular flowers, in turn, are inconspicuous, small in size.

This variety looks good in the garden, in single or group plantings. It is also great for creating bouquets. The bush is upright with strong stems. Like all dahlias, this plant blooms for a long time: from mid-July to the first frost. The height of the plant is 90-120 cm, and the width is from 45-60 cm to 60-90 cm (depending on the size of the tuber). Differs in abundant and lush flowering. The flowers are attractive to butterflies and other insects. This variety is tall, so it needs to be tied up. If you remove faded flowers in time, you can prolong its flowering. Dahlias are heat-loving plants. They can withstand temperatures down to -12.2 ° C frost. Therefore, for the winter, their tubers should be dug up and stored in slightly damp peat, in a dark and cool place. They do this at the end of September.

Interestingly, the dahlia is the national flower of Mexico and was named after Dr Andrew Dahl, a Swedish botanist. Dahlia was first brought to Europe from Mexico. It was first grown in the botanical garden in Madrid. From there, it spread throughout Europe. Both Great Britain and Holland were largely responsible for the cultivation of thousands of cultivars.

Dahlia Avignon will feel good in any well-lit place. It also tolerates partial shade. In addition, the planting site should be well ventilated with warm air. The sprouted tubers are planted outdoors in May or early June, after the threat of return frosts has passed. The tubers should be planted in loose and fertile soil, with a slightly acidic or neutral reaction. It is planted in the middle or in the background of the flower garden. It is also suitable for creating a flower hedge (for this purpose, the tubers are planted closer to each other than usual). The planting depth is 15 cm. The planting distance is 50 cm from each other. Planting density is from 1 to 5 tubers per square metre. Suitable for growing in containers with a volume of at least 12 litres. How to Plant - Dahlia Avignon

Dahlia Avignon

Guide and tips for planting canna lily bulbs

  • Choose the planting location: Canna bulbs prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Avoid planting in areas with standing water or where the soil remains soggy after rainfall.

  • Prepare the soil: Loosen the soil and remove any weeds or debris from the planting area. Amend the soil with compost or organic matter to improve the soil's fertility and drainage.

  • Plant the bulbs: Dig a hole that is about 8-12 cm deep and place the Canna bulb with the pointy end facing up. Space the bulbs about 36-48 cm apart.

  • Cover the bulbs: Cover the Canna bulbs with soil and gently press down to remove air pockets. Make sure the soil level is even with the surrounding soil.

  • Water the bulbs: Give the bulbs a thorough watering after planting to settle the soil around them. Canna bulbs prefer consistently moist soil, so water them regularly, but avoid over-watering as this can cause rot.

  • Mulch the area: Add a layer of organic mulch around the bulbs to help retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the base of the bulbs to prevent rot.

  • Fertilize the plants: Canna plants are heavy feeders and require regular fertilization throughout the growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks or use slow-release fertilizer at the time of planting.

  • Monitor the bulbs: Canna bulbs typically take about 2-3 weeks to sprout, so be patient. Once they sprout, water and fertilize regularly to encourage healthy growth. Canna plants can bloom in mid to late summer and may require occasional deadheading to promote continuous blooming.
