The bulbous perennial Dahlia City of Leiden is a real alien in the flowering world. Planted out in May only, the plant starts to grow vigorously once all the cold weather has died down. In just a few weeks, a dark green plant with a pink cast appears on the plot. The dahlia leaves are rounded, elongated towards the edge and dark green in colour. The foliage often takes on a burgundy cast and retains this colour, shape and freshness until autumn.
In July, the first buds appear on the rounded shrub. As they open they are able to attract attention, surprise and fascinate. The large number of bright pink petals are elongated, thin tubes attached to the bud's head. The petals change size closer to the centre, revealing the white and yellow colours of the young petals. Dahlia changes bud after bud, prolonging flowering until October.
This plant is undemanding, resistant to disease and adapts quickly to all soils. It is important to ensure infrequent and moderate watering, sun or semi-shade and well-drained soil. Remove the bulbs from the soil for the winter and place them in a greenhouse or in closed containers with peat.

How to Plant
Guide and tips for planting Dahlia Bulbs and Tubers
-
Choose the planting location: Dahlia plants prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Avoid planting in areas with standing water or where the soil remains soggy after rainfall.
-
Prepare the soil: Loosen the soil and remove any weeds or debris from the planting area. Amend the soil with compost or organic matter to improve the soil's fertility and drainage.
-
Plant the bulbs or tubers: Dig a hole that is about 12-16 cm deep and place the Dahlia bulb or tuber with the "eyes" facing up. If planting multiple bulbs, space them at least 24-36 cm apart.
-
Cover the bulbs or tubers: Cover the Dahlia bulbs or tubers with soil and gently press down to remove air pockets. Make sure the soil level is even with the surrounding soil.
-
Water the bulbs or tubers: Give the bulbs or tubers a thorough watering after planting to settle the soil around them. Dahlia plants prefer consistently moist soil, so water them regularly, but avoid over-watering as this can cause rot.
-
Stake the plants: Depending on the variety and size of Dahlia plants, they may need to be staked for support. Insert stakes into the ground near the bulbs or tubers before they start growing to avoid damaging the plant later on.
-
Monitor the bulbs or tubers: Dahlia bulbs or tubers typically take about 2-3 weeks to emerge from the soil, so be patient. Once they emerge, water and fertilize regularly to encourage healthy growth. Dahlia plants can bloom in mid to late summer and may require occasional fertilization throughout the growing season.
