Product Description - Fritillaria Imperialis Lutea
The Fritillaria imperialis, commonly known as the Crown Imperial, derives its name from its majestic appearance. Native to the mountain regions of Afghanistan and Iran, this plant features a powerful stem growing up to one meter in height. It is topped with a cluster of dark green leaves, beneath which hangs a ring of vibrant red-orange or yellow bell-shaped flowers.
A unique feature of this plant is its specific garlic-like scent. Because of its striking appearance, the Crown Imperial makes a perfect architectural accent when planted in groups against a lawn background, near water features, or in rock gardens. It pairs beautifully with low irises and primroses.
Key Growing Conditions & Care
- Planting Depth: For large bulbs, a depth of 15–25 cm is required to ensure the stem remains upright.
- Soil: Prefers loose, nutritious soil; coarse river sand and humus are ideal for drainage.
- Light: Grows well in both sun and partial shade, ideally in spots protected from the wind.
- Watering: Requires moisture during spring growth, but proper soil drainage is critical to prevent water stagnation.
- Wintering: These are frost-resistant plants; however, in winters with little snow, they should be covered with non-compacting materials like straw, reeds, or spruce branches.

How to Plant - Fritillaria Imperialis Lutea
Planting & Care Instructions
Fritillarias (Crown Imperials) are impressive spring-flowering bulbs ideal for borders, rock gardens and large pots. Low-maintenance and winter-hardy, they feature unique, majestic blooms and return reliably year after year.
- Planting time: Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, before the ground freezes. Flowering time generally occurs from April to May.
- Preparation: No special pre-soaking required. Handle bulbs carefully as they are fragile.
- Position & soil: Choose a sunny position or partial shade. Plant in loose, rich, well-drained soil. Avoid areas where water tends to collect.
- Planting depth & spacing: For large fritillaria bulbs, size 20/24 cm, plant approximately 15–20 cm deep and 20–30 cm apart.
- Watering: Water once after planting to settle the soil. Additional watering during autumn and winter is usually unnecessary. Avoid waterlogged soil.
- Growing in containers: Use large pots or containers with drainage holes and a well-drained potting mix.
- After flowering: Allow the foliage to remain until it naturally turns yellow and dies back. This allows the bulb to store energy for the following season.
- Returning each year: Fritillarias are winter-hardy perennials that naturally return and bloom for many years when conditions are suitable.
