Product Description - Fritillaria imperialis Varginata
Fritillaria, also known as the fritillary or grouse, is an elegant and exotic perennial that brings sophistication and luxury to any spring garden. Gardeners prize these bulbs for their unusual forms, vibrant colors, and their ability to thrive in various conditions. Popular varieties include the spectacular Crown Imperial (Fritillaria imperialis), the charming checkered Fritillaria meleagris, the exotic dark-hued Persian Fritillary (Fritillaria persica), and the early-blooming Fritillaria raddeana.
Beyond their beauty, they are practical; Fritillaria imperialis bulbs contain substances that repel rodents, helping to protect nearby plants. They are cold-hardy, require minimal maintenance, and can remain in the same spot for many years, gradually increasing their flower count.

How to Plant - Fritillaria imperialis Varginata
Planting & Care Instructions
Fritillarias (Crown Imperials) are impressive spring-flowering bulbs ideal for borders, rock gardens and large pots. Low-maintenance and winter-hardy, they feature unique, majestic blooms and return reliably year after year.
- Planting time: Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, before the ground freezes. Flowering time generally occurs from April to May.
- Preparation: No special pre-soaking required. Handle bulbs carefully as they are fragile.
- Position & soil: Choose a sunny position or partial shade. Plant in loose, rich, well-drained soil. Avoid areas where water tends to collect.
- Planting depth & spacing: For large fritillaria bulbs, size 20/24 cm, plant approximately 15–20 cm deep and 20–30 cm apart.
- Watering: Water once after planting to settle the soil. Additional watering during autumn and winter is usually unnecessary. Avoid waterlogged soil.
- Growing in containers: Use large pots or containers with drainage holes and a well-drained potting mix.
- After flowering: Allow the foliage to remain until it naturally turns yellow and dies back. This allows the bulb to store energy for the following season.
- Returning each year: Fritillarias are winter-hardy perennials that naturally return and bloom for many years when conditions are suitable.
