Planting & Care Instructions

Fritillarias (Crown Imperials) are impressive spring-flowering bulbs ideal for borders, rock gardens and large pots. Low-maintenance and winter-hardy, they feature unique, majestic blooms and return reliably year after year.

  • Planting time: Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, before the ground freezes. Flowering time generally occurs from April to May.
  • Preparation: No special pre-soaking required. Handle bulbs carefully as they are fragile.
  • Position & soil: Choose a sunny position or partial shade. Plant in loose, rich, well-drained soil. Avoid areas where water tends to collect.
  • Planting depth & spacing: For large fritillaria bulbs, size 20/24 cm, plant approximately 15–20 cm deep and 20–30 cm apart.
  • Watering: Water once after planting to settle the soil. Additional watering during autumn and winter is usually unnecessary. Avoid waterlogged soil.
  • Growing in containers: Use large pots or containers with drainage holes and a well-drained potting mix.
  • After flowering: Allow the foliage to remain until it naturally turns yellow and dies back. This allows the bulb to store energy for the following season.
  • Returning each year: Fritillarias are winter-hardy perennials that naturally return and bloom for many years when conditions are suitable.
