About Gooseberry ‘Spinefree’ – Plants and Berries
Gooseberry ‘Spinefree’ is a popular variety known for its sweet, tart berries and its smooth, thornless branches. This easy-to-harvest shrub produces green to red berries, which ripen in mid-summer, perfect for making jams, jellies, or eating fresh. With its compact growth and glossy, dark green foliage, it’s an excellent choice for small gardens, containers, or as an ornamental shrub.
How to Plant Gooseberry ‘Spinefree’?
Plant in well-drained, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Choose a sunny to partially shaded location, ensuring the plant receives at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily. Space plants 90 cm apart to allow for good air circulation. Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and protect the roots during colder months.
