Product Description - Hosta American Halo

Hosta American Halo

Hosta 'American Halo' is a striking, giant-sized perennial, a sport of Hosta 'Northern Halo,' renowned for its large, intensely blue-green leaves with wide, rippled, creamy-white margins that transition from pale yellow to ivory white as the season progresses. The heavily corrugated, thick-substanced foliage forms an impressive, dense mound, offering excellent slug resistance and a bold texture. In early to mid-summer (June–July), near-white flowers with pale lavender stripes bloom on scapes up to 60–75 cm, attracting hummingbirds and bees.

This slow-growing hosta reaches a mature height of 45–60 cm and a spread of 150–175 cm, making it ideal for shade gardens, as a ground cover, or as a dramatic specimen in woodland or cottage gardens. It thrives in partial to full shade with moist, well-drained, fertile soil (pH 5.5–7.5), preferably sandy loam for better root aeration. 'American Halo' tolerates morning sun to enhance leaf color but should be protected from hot afternoon sun.

How to Plant - Hosta American Halo

Guide and tips for planting Hosta Bare-Root Plants

  • Choose the planting location: Hosta plants prefer partial shade to full shade and well-drained soil. Avoid planting in areas with standing water or where the soil remains soggy after rainfall.

  • Prepare the soil: Loosen the soil and remove any weeds or debris from the planting area. Amend the soil with compost or organic matter to improve the soil's fertility and drainage.

  • Soak the Bare-Root Plants: Soak the Hosta Bare-Root Plants in water for at least an hour before planting. This will help to hydrate the roots and encourage healthy growth.

  • Dig a hole: Dig a hole deep enough to accommodate the roots of the plant. The hole should be slightly wider than the spread of the roots.

  • Place the plant in the hole: Carefully remove the Hosta Bare-Root Plant from its packaging and gently spread out the roots. Place the plant in the hole and backfill with soil, making sure the crown of the plant, where the roots meet the stem, is level with the soil surface. Press down firmly to eliminate air pockets.

  • Water the plant: Give the plant a thorough watering after planting to settle the soil around the roots. Continue to water the plant regularly to keep the soil evenly moist until the plant becomes established.

  • Mulch the plant: Add a layer of organic mulch around the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the base of the plant to prevent rot.

  • Monitor the plant: Keep an eye on the plant's growth and water it regularly as needed. Hosta plants generally bloom in mid to late summer and may require occasional fertilization throughout the growing season.
