Product Description - Hydrangea (Hortensia) Groundbreaker Ruby
Hydrangea (Hortensia) 'Ruby' is an exceptional deciduous shrub that commands attention with its magnificent, cone-shaped flower panicles in a deep, enchanting ruby-red hue. As the densely packed florets mature, they develop a rich, dusty rose to crimson saturation, creating a breathtaking, velvety texture that stands out brilliantly in the landscape. This captivating and passionate colour palette brings a touch of dramatic elegance to garden borders, woodland settings, or striking cut flower arrangements, offering a bold and sophisticated alternative to lighter pastel varieties.
This hardy and vigorous shrub forms a well-branched, upright habit, typically reaching a height of 120–150 cm (48–60 inches). Its sturdy, reliable stems are perfectly equipped to support the substantial 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) flower panicles, keeping them upright and proud throughout the season without drooping. Framed by lush, deeply veined green foliage, the spectacular blooms are incredibly long-lasting. 'Ruby' thrives in full sun to partial shade, rewarding gardeners with a continuous, low-maintenance, and highly visual performance from mid-summer well into the crisp days of autumn.

How to Plant - Hydrangea (Hortensia) Groundbreaker Ruby
Planting & Care Instructions
Hortensias feature elegant blooms that are ideal for borders, pots, and as stunning cut flowers. They are winter-hardy shrubs and, when planted in suitable conditions, will return and flower yearly.
- Planting time: Plant in autumn, from September to December. Hortensias generally bloom from June to September, providing beautiful summer color.
- Position & soil: Choose a position in part shade to full sun. Plant in moist, well-drained soil to ensure healthy root development.
- Planting depth & spacing: Dig a hole wide enough for the root system. Plant approximately 5–8 cm deep and space the plants 80–120 cm apart to allow them enough room to spread.
- Watering: Water once after planting to settle the soil well. During active growth, keep the soil just lightly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
- Growing in containers: Use large pots with drainage holes and a moist, well-drained potting mix. Container-grown hortensias may need more frequent watering during the blooming season.
- After flowering: You can leave the faded blooms on the plant through winter to provide frost protection for new buds, or trim them back depending on the variety's specific pruning needs.
- Returning each year: Because they are winter-hardy, hortensias will return yearly. With proper care and suitable conditions, they will grow into robust shrubs with abundant flowers each season.
