Product Description

Hydrangea (Hortensia) Sundae Fraise

Hydrangea Sundae Fraise (Hortensia paniculata 'Sundae Fraise'®). New! Large conical inflorescences are painted in two colors, pink and white. Therefore, at the peak of flowering, it is impossible to take your eyes off this hydrangea. In addition, "Sundae Fraise'® is valued for its compact growth. The small size of this hydrangea makes it ideal for terraces and small gardens. It is also appreciated for its abundant and lush flowering.

The panicle inflorescences are medium-sized and long. The flowers in the inflorescences are small and numerous. They are initially white with green "flashes" and then quickly acquire a pink hue. They are covered with a blush from the bottom, from the base to the top. And the peaks of the inflorescences remain white. Therefore, the inflorescences resemble ice cream, hence the name. In September, the flowers turn dark red. Thus, the panicles are very colorful. They look like lilac inflorescences. The color of the flowers is also affected by lighting: in the full sun, the flowers blush, and in the shade, the flowers turn green.

  • Inflorescence length: up to 20 cm
  • Flowering period: July - September
  • The size of the bush: 2 x 1.5 m

Sterile hydrangea flowers are collected in lush and dense panicle inflorescences. The length of the inflorescences is up to 20 cm. This hydrangea blooms in July. And its flowering ends in early September. The leaves are oval and deep green. They are green in spring and summer, and in autumn, they become yellow. The foliage contrasts beautifully with panicle inflorescences. This variety can grow on any soil. It does not have significant requirements for soil composition - garden soil is enough, provided the soil is slightly acidic and moderately moist. It also tolerates most poor soils (containing sand and stones) and drought. The location for this variety is sunny and semi-shady. Panicles of this hydrangea are also suitable for cutting and as dried flowers. Average frost resistance: this hydrangea can withstand temperatures down to - 20 ° C. Therefore, it must be carefully covered for the winter. The size of the bush: 2 x 1.5 m. Prune this plant in March, above the first shoot of the previous year. This will promote more compact growth and flowering. The plant will not make new shoots if you cut old sprouts for more than two years. Later, leaves will also not appear until the end of March.

How to Plant

Hydrangea (Hortensia) Sundae Fraise

Hydrangea planting instructions and tips

  • Choose a suitable location: Hydrangeas prefer partially shaded areas with well-draining soil. Avoid planting them in areas with full sun or where the soil remains constantly wet.

  • Prepare the soil: Dig a hole that is twice as wide and deep as the root ball of the hydrangea plant. Mix in some compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil and improve its drainage.

  • Plant the hydrangea: Gently remove the plant from its container and place it in the center of the hole. The top of the root ball should be level with the surrounding soil. Backfill the hole with the soil mixture and lightly tamp it down.

  • Water the plant: Give the newly planted hydrangea a deep watering to settle the soil around the roots. Water it regularly, especially during hot and dry weather.

  • Mulch around the plant: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture in the soil and suppress weeds.

  • Care for the plant: Hydrangeas require regular care, including pruning, fertilizing, and pest control. Follow the recommended guidelines for your specific hydrangea variety to ensure its optimal growth and health.
