Product Description - Iris Hollandica Alaska
Iris Hollandica Alaska (Iris x hollandica 'Alaska'). New! This is a bulbous Dutch iris that belongs to the xiphium group. It is a spectacular herbaceous bulbous plant. A perennial plant.
This variety was bred in the Netherlands. Its snow-white colour with yellow specks at the base distinguishes it from other varieties. This is a beautiful, inexpensive iris that will delight you with spectacular flowering in early summer. It has a strong flower-bearing stem that grows up to 45-60 cm in height. There are usually 1-2 flowers on the peduncle, measuring 4-5 cm in diameter. They have rather wide petals (perianth lobes). There are 6 of them: 3 vertical inner perianth lobes and three outer ones. The inner perianth lobes are small, tilted downwards, and the outer lobes have yellow ridges. The leaves are basal, collected in a bunch. They are lanceolate, grooved, green in colour. They are very similar to the leaves of rhizome irises. Dutch irises will look good in the garden and in containers, and even better in a vase, These plants make beautiful bouquets and floral arrangements.
When choosing a place for planting irises, consider their light and heat tolerance. Like all bulbs, this iris has a dormant period. It begins in September. It is a universal forcing variety and an industrial cut crop. After flowering, leave the foliage on the plant intact. When it turns yellow, you can remove it. The flowering period is May - June.

How to Plant - Iris Hollandica Alaska
Planting & Care Instructions
Dutch irises are elegant spring- to early summer-flowering bulbs ideal for garden borders, pots and cut flower arrangements. For the best flowering results, choose a suitable location and follow the recommended planting depth for high-quality bulbs.
- Planting time: Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, before the ground freezes. Flowering time generally occurs from May to June.
- Position & soil: Choose a full sun position. Plant in loose, fertile and well-drained soil. Avoid areas where water tends to collect.
- Planting depth & spacing: Place the bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards. For Dutch iris bulbs, size 8+ cm, plant approximately 8–10 cm deep and 8–10 cm apart.
- Watering: Water once after planting to settle the soil. Additional watering during autumn is usually unnecessary. Avoid waterlogged soil.
- Growing in containers: Use pots or balcony boxes with drainage holes and a well-drained potting mix. Bulbs can be planted slightly closer together than in garden beds.
- After flowering: Remove faded flowers, but allow the foliage to remain until it naturally turns yellow and dies back. This allows the bulb to store energy for the following season.
- Returning each year: Dutch irises are winter-hardy perennials that can naturally return and bloom year after year when left in suitable growing conditions.
