Planting & Care Instructions

Oriental poppies (Papaver) produce dramatic, vibrant blooms and attractive seed pods, making them a centerpiece in spring and early summer gardens. Easy to grow, drought-tolerant, and fully hardy, they return year after year with striking color.

• Planting time: Plant bare-root plants in autumn from September to November or in spring from March to May. Flowering time generally occurs from May to July.
• Preparation: Unpack bare roots promptly. Handle gently as poppies develop a deep taproot that dislikes disturbance.
• Position & soil: Choose a position in full sun. Plant in well-drained soil; poppies dislike waterlogging.
• Planting depth & spacing: Plant with crowns approximately 2–3 cm below the soil surface, placing the taproot vertically downwards. Space plants 40–50 cm apart.
• Watering: Water well to establish, but avoid soggy soil. Once established, oriental poppies are drought-tolerant and require minimal watering.
• Growing in containers: Due to their long taproots, poppies thrive best when planted directly in the ground, but very deep containers with good drainage can be used.
• After flowering: Poppies often go dormant in mid-summer after flowering. Cut foliage back to ground level as it turns yellow; fresh growth will reappear in autumn.
• Returning each year: Fully hardy perennials that established deep roots, returning reliably every spring.

• Roses, Perennials (except peonies), Bushes and other plants in pots - from 1 March until 1 June.
