Product Description - Papaver (orientale) Harvest Moon

Papaver (orientale) Harvest Moon

Papaver or. 'Harvest Moon' is a wonderful oriental poppy variety. This variety is admired by everyone, without exception. It will refresh the landscape of any garden. Oriental or Oriental poppy is a spectacular herbaceous perennial with many huge flowers. They are single, turned upwards, with huge satin petals. The colour of the petals is bright orange with light reflections and a dark centre. The size of the flowers is up to 15 cm in diameter! The buds are drooping, and when they bloom, they are levelled. The leaves are pinnately dissected, densely pubescent, collected in a basal rosette. Their colour is dark green. It blooms for 2-3 weeks. The stems are upright, very strong.

The flowering of this poppy is a truly breathtaking sight. By planting it in flower beds or borders, you will enjoy it for many years. It should be planted in a lighted place, in soils with good drainage. The distance between plants when planting should be about 45 cm. Since poppy leaves wither immediately after flowering, plant it with other perennials, such as dahlias or ornamental grasses. They will hide the inconspicuous poppy leaves, but should not cover the young leaves. Avoid planting in wide open spaces. Although poppies do not bloom for long, they are easy to grow. And if you cut off the ground part after flowering, you can get a second bloom later in the summer.

This variety is unpretentious. It does not need shelter for the winter. Suitable for cutting (when the buds are just beginning to open). Propagated by dividing the bush in August-September. The plant is 70-80 cm tall and 30-60 cm wide. The flowering period is late spring - early summer.

How to Plant - Papaver (orientale) Harvest Moon

Papaver (orientale) Harvest Moon

Guide and tips for planting papaver plants

  • Choose the planting location: Papaver plants prefer full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Avoid planting in areas with standing water or where the soil remains soggy after rainfall.

  • Prepare the soil: Loosen the soil and remove any weeds or debris from the planting area. Amend the soil with compost or organic matter to improve the soil's fertility and drainage.

  • Dig a hole: Dig a hole deep enough to accommodate the roots of the plant. The hole should be slightly wider than the spread of the roots.

  • Place the plant in the hole: Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen any tangled roots. Place the plant in the hole and backfill with soil, making sure the crown of the plant, where the roots meet the stem, is level with the soil surface. Press down firmly to eliminate air pockets.

  • Water the plant: Give the plant a thorough watering after planting to settle the soil around the roots. Continue to water the plant regularly to keep the soil evenly moist until the plant becomes established.

  • Mulch the plant: Add a layer of organic mulch around the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the base of the plant to prevent rot.

  • Monitor the plant: Keep an eye on the plant's growth and water it regularly as needed. Papaver plants generally bloom in late spring to early summer and may require occasional deadheading to encourage continued blooming.
