Papaver (orientale) Picotee
Product Description - Papaver (orientale) Picotee
Picotee poppy is a perennial herb with flowers of indescribable beauty. The height of the plant is 75 cm. This poppy variety is very luxurious, its flowers seem to glow. And all thanks to the fact that the petals are coloured in two colours: closer to the core, they are white, and the edges are decorated with a wide orange-red border. The flowers are quite large - up to 18 cm in diameter, the height of the peduncle reaches 90 cm. Flowering time is May-June. The leaves are lacy, matte green.
Oriental poppy forms a large spreading bush, with long stems and large pinnately dissected openwork leaves of matte green colour. Unlike opium poppy, oriental poppy does not contain any harmful (narcotic) substances. Therefore, you can safely grow it in your garden and enjoy its beauty. Each flower blooms for a day or two, and the whole bush blooms for a month. Therefore, to create a striking effect, plant the plants in groups of several in each. Allow plenty of space for oriental poppies, as they grow quickly and can grow in one place for many years.
Poppy is undemanding to soil and moisture. But it needs a bright, sunny place. To make the plants grow strong and produce many flowers, plant them in fertile soil. Oriental poppy will not die even in a dry summer. But it is better not to feel it, and water it as needed. The plant can withstand frosts down to -40°C.
Even a novice gardener can grow poppies. Since poppies have a taproot system, they do not like frequent transplants. Make sure that the soil does not stagnate. During the season, fertilise the bushes 1-2 times with organic fertiliser or mulch them with garden compost.
The blooming of this poppy is a truly breathtaking sight. Planting it in flower beds or borders, you will enjoy it for many years. Since poppy leaves wither immediately after flowering, plant them together with other perennials, such as dahlias or ornamental grasses. They hide the inconspicuous foliage of the poppy, but should not cover the young leaves. Avoid planting in wide open spaces. Although they don't bloom for long, poppies are easy to grow. And if you cut off the ground part after flowering, you can get a second bloom later in the summer. This variety is unpretentious. It does not need shelter for the winter. It is suitable for cutting (when the buds are just beginning to open).

How to Plant - Papaver (orientale) Picotee
Guide and tips for planting papaver plants
-
Choose the planting location: Papaver plants prefer full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Avoid planting in areas with standing water or where the soil remains soggy after rainfall.
-
Prepare the soil: Loosen the soil and remove any weeds or debris from the planting area. Amend the soil with compost or organic matter to improve the soil's fertility and drainage.
-
Dig a hole: Dig a hole deep enough to accommodate the roots of the plant. The hole should be slightly wider than the spread of the roots.
-
Place the plant in the hole: Carefully remove the plant from its container and gently loosen any tangled roots. Place the plant in the hole and backfill with soil, making sure the crown of the plant, where the roots meet the stem, is level with the soil surface. Press down firmly to eliminate air pockets.
-
Water the plant: Give the plant a thorough watering after planting to settle the soil around the roots. Continue to water the plant regularly to keep the soil evenly moist until the plant becomes established.
-
Mulch the plant: Add a layer of organic mulch around the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the base of the plant to prevent rot.
-
Monitor the plant: Keep an eye on the plant's growth and water it regularly as needed. Papaver plants generally bloom in late spring to early summer and may require occasional deadheading to encourage continued blooming.
