Product Description - Peony Bartzella (ITOH )
Peony Bartzella, a celebrated intersectional (Itoh) hybrid introduced in 1986 by Roger F. Anderson, is a masterpiece of horticultural innovation, blending the best traits of herbaceous and tree peonies. This variety commands attention with its enormous, semi-double to fully double flowers, spanning 6–8 inches across, that burst forth in a radiant lemon-yellow hue — a rare and coveted color among peonies. The softly ruffled petals, delicately edged with subtle pinkish-red flares at the base, create a glowing, sunlit effect reminiscent of a summer sunrise or the warm elegance of a golden chalice. At the heart of each bloom lies a cluster of vibrant red stamens, adding a striking contrast that enhances the flower’s luminous depth. The blooms, often up to 20 per plant on mature specimens, release a delightful, citrusy fragrance with notes of lemon and spice, filling the air with an invigorating freshness that elevates any garden or bouquet. Bartzella’s vivid color, robust form, and extended bloom time — often lasting up to three weeks — make it a showstopper, perfect for gardeners seeking a bold yet refined statement of luxury and vibrancy.
The allure of Peony Bartzella extends beyond its stunning aesthetics to its exceptional vigor and versatility. Its sturdy, woody stems, reaching 80–90 cm, provide robust support for the heavy blooms, ensuring they remain upright through wind, rain, or heat without staking, making it a reliable performer in USDA zones 3–8. This intersectional hybrid thrives in full sun to light shade, preferring rich, well-drained soils, and once established, it boasts remarkable resistance to pests, diseases, and drought, offering decades of low-maintenance beauty. The lush, dark green foliage, inherited from its tree peony parentage, forms a compact, rounded mound that remains attractive from spring through fall, with some leaves turning bronze or golden in autumn for added seasonal interest. Ideal for mixed borders, as a focal point in contemporary or cottage gardens, or as a long-lasting star in floral arrangements, Peony Bartzella brings a sense of radiant joy and sophisticated charm, creating an atmosphere of sunlit elegance and timeless wonder wherever it blooms.

How to Plant - Peony Bartzella (ITOH )
Guide and tips for planting peony plants and bulbs
-
Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
-
Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the diameter of the peony bulb or root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
-
Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
-
Place the peony bulb or root in the hole with the "eyes" (small buds) facing up and the crown (thickened stem base) no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface.
-
Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the bulb or root.
-
Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
-
Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
-
Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
-
As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
-
After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
