Product Description - Peony Buckeye Belle (Herbaceous)

Peony Buckeye Belle (Herbaceous)

Peonies are garden royalty, cherished for their timeless elegance, durability, and splendid blooms that return yearly with minimal care. These perennials thrive in diverse climates, offering opulent, fragrant flowers that transform romantic, modern, or vibrant gardens into havens of beauty and serenity.

The Peony Buckeye Belle, a striking herbaceous peony introduced in 1956 by American breeder Walter Mains, is a bold and award-winning variety, earning the American Peony Society Gold Medal for its exceptional beauty and vigor. Its large, semi-double flowers, spanning 5–7 inches across, unfurl in a deep, velvety mahogany-red hue with a subtle blackish sheen, evoking the rich tones of polished buckeye wood or a midnight sunset. The loosely arranged, slightly cupped petals surround a vibrant center of golden-yellow stamens, creating a dramatic contrast that radiates intensity and warmth. Each bloom releases a subtle, spicy fragrance with hints of clove and earth. With multiple blooms per stem, 'Buckeye Belle' delivers a robust early-season show lasting 2–3 weeks, making it a standout for gardeners seeking bold sophistication in borders, bouquets, or dramatic landscapes.

This variety is as practical as it is stunning, combining striking aesthetics with reliable performance. Its strong, upright stems, reaching 80–90 cm, support the substantial blooms through rain or wind without staking, ensuring a pristine presentation in USDA zones 3–8. Thriving in full sun to light shade with fertile, well-drained soil, 'Buckeye Belle' establishes readily with moderate watering and becomes drought-tolerant and pest-resistant once mature, promising decades of dependable beauty. The glossy, dark green foliage forms a bushy mound up to 80–90 cm wide, remaining attractive through summer and transitioning to reddish-bronze tones in autumn for year-round appeal. Ideal for mixed borders, as a long-lasting cut flower with a 7–10 day vase life, or as a bold accent in modern or traditional gardens, Peony Buckeye Belle infuses spaces with vibrant intensity and timeless elegance.

How to Plant - Peony Buckeye Belle (Herbaceous)

Peony Buckeye Belle (Herbaceous)

Planting & Care Instructions

Peonies are hardy, long-lived perennials valued for their large flowers and excellent performance in borders, flower beds and cutting gardens. Bare-root peonies need time to establish, but once settled they can return and flower for many years.

  • Planting time: Plant bare-root peonies in March–May or September–November, when the soil is workable and not frozen. Established plants generally flower from May to June, depending on the variety and local climate.
  • Position & soil: Choose a position in full sun or partial shade. Peonies perform best in rich, loose and well-drained soil. Avoid areas where water tends to collect.
  • Planting depth & spacing: Spread the roots naturally in the planting hole and position them approximately 5–7 cm deep. Keep the crown and growth buds close to the soil surface and avoid planting too deeply. Leave approximately 60–90 cm between plants.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist during establishment, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging.
  • Growing in containers: Peonies can be grown in large, deep containers with drainage holes and a rich, well-drained potting mix. Allow enough space for the root system to develop.
  • During the first season: Bare-root peonies may focus mainly on developing roots during their first year. Flowering can be limited or may begin in a later season as the plant becomes established.
  • After flowering: Remove faded flowers if desired, but keep the healthy foliage throughout summer. Cut the stems back only after the foliage has naturally declined at the end of the growing season.
  • Returning each year: Peonies are long-lived, winter-hardy perennials and can return and flower for many years when planted correctly and left relatively undisturbed.
