Product Description - Peony itoh Garden Treasure
Peony Garden Treasure, a multiple award-winning Itoh hybrid introduced in 1973 through the groundbreaking cross of a herbaceous peony with the tree peony cultivar Alice Harding, stands as a radiant testament to horticultural ingenuity, often hailed as the finest yellow intersectional peony by enthusiasts worldwide. This variety unveils enormous semi-double flowers, spanning 6–8 inches across and packed with 20–50 ruffled petals in a luminous golden-yellow hue that evokes the warmth of buried treasure unearthed under summer sun. At the heart of each bloom, delicate scarlet flushes radiate like hidden rubies, adding a dramatic yet harmonious contrast that deepens the flower's glowing allure and catches the eye from afar. Emerging from sturdy, herbaceous stems, the blooms unfurl in a tree-peony-like extravagance, releasing a delightful lemony fragrance that mingles citrusy freshness with subtle spice, perfuming the garden air and drawing bees and butterflies in a symphony of pollination. With prolific side buds ensuring a sequential display lasting 2–4 weeks, Garden Treasure delivers up to 50 flowers on mature plants, creating a golden cascade that infuses landscapes with a sense of opulent discovery and joyful abundance, whether as a standalone spectacle or a vibrant accent in bouquets destined for admiration.
The practical excellence of Peony Garden Treasure matches its visual splendor, offering gardeners a vigorous, low-maintenance performer that elevates any setting with its resilience and adaptability. Its robust, upright stems, reaching 60–75 cm and inheriting the woody strength of its tree peony lineage, provide unyielding support for the heavy blooms through wind, rain, or heat without staking, ensuring a pristine, elevated presentation in USDA zones 3–8. Thriving in full sun to partial shade with rich, well-drained soils enriched with organic matter and a slightly acidic pH of 6.5–7.0, this hybrid establishes quickly with moderate watering but proves exceptionally drought-tolerant and resistant to pests and diseases once mature, promising decades of reliable, uniform flowering from overwintering buds. The deeply dissected, glossy dark green foliage forms a compact yet widely spreading mound up to 150 cm across, emerging with fresh vigor in spring, maintaining lush structure through summer, and subtly warming to bronze tones in late fall for year-round appeal. Ideal for sunny mixed borders, as a long-lasting cut flower with over a week's vase life, or as a focal point in contemporary or cottage gardens, Peony Garden Treasure brings a sense of radiant luxury and timeless wonder, creating an atmosphere of golden serenity and cherished delight wherever it flourishes.

How to Plant - Peony itoh Garden Treasure
Guide and tips for planting peony plants and bulbs
-
Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil.
-
Dig a hole that is 2-3 times wider than the diameter of the peony bulb or root and deep enough to accommodate it comfortably.
-
Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.
-
Place the peony bulb or root in the hole with the "eyes" (small buds) facing up and the crown (thickened stem base) no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface.
-
Fill the hole with soil and gently firm the soil around the bulb or root.
-
Water the soil until it is evenly moist.
-
Cover the area with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
-
Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.
-
As the plant grows, provide support to the stem to prevent it from bending or breaking.
-
After the flowers have faded, cut the stem off at the base and continue to care for the plant by watering it regularly and providing it with full sun or partial shade.
