Product Description - Peony Inspecteur Lavergne (Herbaceous)
Peonies are garden royalty, cherished for their timeless elegance, durability, and splendid blooms that return yearly with minimal care. These perennials thrive in diverse climates, offering opulent, fragrant flowers that transform romantic, modern, or vibrant gardens into havens of beauty and serenity.
The Peony Inspecteur Lavergne, a classic herbaceous variety introduced in 1924 by the renowned French breeder Victor Lemoine, is a striking heirloom celebrated for its bold color and refined form. Its large, fully double flowers, spanning 6–8 inches across, unfurl in a vivid crimson-red hue with a velvety texture, evoking the rich intensity of a fine ruby or a regal tapestry. The densely packed, ruffled petals form a high-crowned, globular bloom, occasionally revealing subtle white streaks at the center for added depth and intrigue. Each flower releases a mild, sweet fragrance with warm, rosy notes, perfuming the air and attracting pollinators for a lively garden display. With multiple blooms per stem, 'Inspecteur Lavergne' delivers a vibrant midseason show lasting 2–3 weeks, making it a favorite for gardeners seeking dramatic elegance in borders, bouquets, or traditional landscapes.
This variety is as practical as it is stunning, blending bold aesthetics with robust performance. Its strong, upright stems, reaching 80–90 cm, support the heavy blooms through rain or wind, though staking may be needed in exposed sites, ensuring a pristine presentation in USDA zones 3–8. Thriving in full sun to light shade with fertile, well-drained soil, 'Inspecteur Lavergne' establishes readily with moderate watering and becomes drought-tolerant and pest-resistant once mature, promising decades of reliable beauty. The glossy, dark green foliage forms a bushy mound up to 80–90 cm wide, remaining attractive through summer and transitioning to subtle bronze tones in autumn for year-round appeal. Ideal for mixed borders, as a long-lasting cut flower with a 7–10 day vase life, or as a commanding accent in formal or cottage gardens, Peony Inspecteur Lavergne infuses spaces with radiant intensity and timeless sophistication.

How to Plant - Peony Inspecteur Lavergne (Herbaceous)
Planting & Care Instructions
Peonies are hardy, long-lived perennials valued for their large flowers and excellent performance in borders, flower beds and cutting gardens. Bare-root peonies need time to establish, but once settled they can return and flower for many years.
- Planting time: Plant bare-root peonies in March–May or September–November, when the soil is workable and not frozen. Established plants generally flower from May to June, depending on the variety and local climate.
- Position & soil: Choose a position in full sun or partial shade. Peonies perform best in rich, loose and well-drained soil. Avoid areas where water tends to collect.
- Planting depth & spacing: Spread the roots naturally in the planting hole and position them approximately 5–7 cm deep. Keep the crown and growth buds close to the soil surface and avoid planting too deeply. Leave approximately 60–90 cm between plants.
- Watering: Water thoroughly after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist during establishment, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging.
- Growing in containers: Peonies can be grown in large, deep containers with drainage holes and a rich, well-drained potting mix. Allow enough space for the root system to develop.
- During the first season: Bare-root peonies may focus mainly on developing roots during their first year. Flowering can be limited or may begin in a later season as the plant becomes established.
- After flowering: Remove faded flowers if desired, but keep the healthy foliage throughout summer. Cut the stems back only after the foliage has naturally declined at the end of the growing season.
- Returning each year: Peonies are long-lived, winter-hardy perennials and can return and flower for many years when planted correctly and left relatively undisturbed.
