Product Description - Tulip Ajaccio
The Tulipa 'Ajaccio' is a true aristocrat of the spring garden, striking with its dramatic beauty, exclusive texture, and regal coloring. This variety combines two of the most striking tulip traits: a lush, multi-layered peony-like form and a dense, finely defined needle fringe adorning each petal, resembling delicate crystals of dark ice. Its captivating color is a deep, magnetic burgundy-red that shifts, depending on the light, between shades of aged wine, ripe cherry, and dark velvet.
The plant produces very thick, rigid, and remarkably sturdy stems that hold the massive, densely packed blooms upright, even through heavy spring rain or wind. The resilient blue-green foliage forms a neat rosette at the base, creating a lush backdrop that beautifully sets off the deep, dramatic tone of the flowers. The blooms also carry a light fragrance, adding a further sensory dimension to this elegant variety.
'Ajaccio' is a showstopper for the front and middle rows of formal beds, borders, mixed plantings, and pathway edges. It looks most impressive in dense groups of 10–15 bulbs, forming luxurious velvet-toned pockets of color, and creates a masterful contrast alongside snow-white double daffodils, soft pastel-pink tulips, and blue grape hyacinths. Thanks to its compact size and sturdy stems, this variety also thrives in decorative pots and containers on patios or terraces. Florists prize these luxurious, shaggy blooms for cutting — in spring bouquets they look remarkably rich and exclusive, holding their freshness in a vase for a long time.

How to Plant - Tulip Ajaccio
Planting & Care Instructions
Tulips are hardy spring-flowering bulbs ideal for garden beds, borders, pots and balcony boxes. For the best flowering results, choose a suitable location and follow the recommended planting depth for each tulip type.
- Planting time: Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, before the ground becomes deeply frozen. Flowering time varies by type and variety, generally from March to May.
- Position & soil: Choose a sunny position or partial shade. Plant in loose, fertile and well-drained soil. Avoid areas where water tends to collect.
- Planting depth & spacing: Place the bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards. For standard garden tulips, size 11/12 cm, plant approximately 10–15 cm deep and 10–12 cm apart. For botanical tulips, size 6/8 cm, plant approximately 8–10 cm deep and 8–10 cm apart.
- Watering: Water moderately after planting, especially when the soil is dry. Additional watering during autumn is usually unnecessary. Avoid waterlogged soil.
- Growing in containers: Use pots or balcony boxes with drainage holes and a well-drained potting mix. Bulbs can be planted slightly closer together than in garden beds.
- After flowering: Remove faded flowers, but allow the foliage to remain until it naturally turns yellow and dies back. This allows the bulb to store energy for the following season.
- Returning each year: Botanical tulips are particularly suitable for naturalising and can multiply and flower for many years when conditions are suitable. Garden tulips may also return in following seasons, although flowering performance depends on the variety and growing conditions.
