Product Description - Weigela florida Foliis Purpureis

Weigela florida Foliis Purpureis

Weigela Folies Purpureis is a beautifully flowering, decorative deciduous shrub. The crown is spherical, spreading. It grows annually in width and height of 20-30 cm. An adult plant reaches a height of 1-1.5 m crown width of up to 2 m—Weigela blooms from June to July. Flowers were formed on the shoots of last year. Flowering is abundant and long. It can bloom again in September, but less magnificently. During flowering, the bush is densely covered with numerous flowers. Flowers are bell-shaped, dark pink, 2.5-3 cm long, and collected in several pieces. Weigelas attract many small insect birds with a long snouts, similar to hummingbirds, to the garden during flowering. After flowering, the shrub does not lose its decorative effect, thanks to the beautiful leaves that stay on the bush until late autumn. The leaves are broadly elliptic, opposite, brown-green or brown-red, and 6-8 cm long. Shrubs growing in open sunny areas have almost brown leaves. Shoots are even, laterally inclined, and woody over the years.

Weigela has a well-developed root system, which easily adapts to compacted soils. Weigela loves a lot of light. Therefore, for the weigela to bloom brightly and abundantly, give it an open, well-lit, protected from drafts and winds area. Although you can plant it in partial shade, there will be fewer flowers. The plants do not bloom in the shade, and the branches are strongly stretched and fall to the ground. The variegated leaves of Weigel change color in the shade. As for the soil, weigelas need well-fertilized, loose, moisture-permeable soil. The plant does not tolerate water stagnation, so use drainage when planting. Weigel's do not bloom on wet grounds. The plant is frost-resistant (but young plants need to be covered) and almost not susceptible to diseases and pests (can be affected by aphids). Durability is 50 years.

Weigel's are ideal for creating a living flowering hedge, for group plantings, creating borders, and for tapeworm plantings; they make excellent standard plants.

Weigela florida Foliis Purpureis

Weigela planting instructions and tips

  • Choose a sunny to partially shady spot in your garden with well-draining soil.

  • Dig a hole that is two times as wide and slightly deeper than the root ball of the weigela plant.

  • Mix some compost or other organic matter into the soil at the bottom of the hole.

  • Place the weigela plant in the hole and fill the hole halfway with soil.

  • Gently tamp the soil down and water thoroughly.

  • Add the remaining soil and firm it around the base of the plant.

  • Water the plant again and add a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  • Water the plant regularly, making sure not to let the soil dry out completely.

  • Prune the weigela plant in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches.

  • Fertilize the plant with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring and midsummer.
