Product Description - Blueberry Spartan
Blueberry 'Spartan' (Vaccinium corymbosum) is a vigorous, early-season Northern Highbush blueberry prized for its large, firm, sapphire-blue berries with a sweet, tangy flavor and crisp texture. Introduced by the USDA in 1977, its quarter-sized fruits are perfect for fresh eating, baking, or preserving, and are rich in antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C. The upright, deciduous shrub features glossy green foliage that transforms into vibrant orange and yellow hues in fall, adding ornamental appeal to landscapes.
This variety grows vigorously and blooms with white flowers in late spring, followed by a bountiful harvest. Ideal for edible hedges, containers, or mixed borders, it thrives in full sun and acidic, well-drained soil (pH 4.5–5.5) rich in organic matter. Partially self-fertile, it yields larger crops with cross-pollination from another highbush variety. Hardy in USDA Zones 5–8, it requires 800 chill hours and is moderately resistant to pests and diseases, with netting recommended to protect berries from birds.
