Product Description - Iris hollandica Silvery Beauty
Iris Silvery Beauty (Dutch Iris 'Silvery Beauty'®, Iris hollandica 'Silvery Beauty'®). New! The name of this beautiful variety translates to "Silver Beauty". And it lives up to its name one hundred per cent. The colour of the Dutch Silvery Beauty iris is so unusual that it really needs to be planted in a prominent place in the garden. The flowers are purple-blue with almost white drops marked with yellow specks. The plant itself is characterised by rather tall stems (50 cm or more). The flowers are about 13 cm in diameter. Pay attention to another equally elegant variety - Dutch iris, also known as Iris hollandica, has exotic orchid flowers with silky petals.
An interesting fact. Earlier, the iris derived from Iris xiphium was known only as "Spanish Iris", and since the beginning of the twentieth century, the modern name - Iris Hollandica or Dutch Iris - has spread. The name "Dutch Iris" described plants whose origin was not very clear, and "Spanish Iris" became forgotten. But there is no doubt that the first iris under the name "Dutch" was bred by the famous Tubergen nursery in the Netherlands, and is a genetic improvement from the Hoog brothers. The most important development of these iridescent flowers occurred in the fifties and there are currently many varieties on the market. The most important development of these irises has occurred since the 1950s and there are currently many varieties on the market.
Features:
- It is a bulbous or Dutch iris that belongs to the xiphium group.
- It was obtained as a result of hybridisation.
- A wonderful, inexpensive variety that will delight you with its flowering in May-June.
- Dutch iris, also known as Iris hollandica, has exotic orchid flowers with silky petals.
- It usually blooms earlier than Iris anglicum, but thanks to the simple storage of the bulbs, flowering can be "programmed" even for later periods.
- It stands out noticeably for its appearance.
- The flowers are crowned at the top of the peduncle (2-5 pieces each).
- They open gradually from top to bottom.
- The flowers consist of three inner petals (or rather, perianth lobes), which are directed upwards, forming a vault, and three outer petals, bent downwards.
- The outer petals often differ in shape and colour from the inner ones.
- The leaves are sword-shaped, collected in a basal bunch.
- This iris is one of the easiest ornamental geophytes to cultivate.
- The dormant period begins in September.
- Dutch irises should be grown in full sun in rich and permeable soil, possibly slightly alkaline. In spring, they need coolness and plenty of moisture (but not stagnant water), in summer - a lot of heat, in winter - abundant snow cover. This variety tolerates hot, dry summers. But, nevertheless, when choosing a place for planting irises, take into account their light and heat requirements. Withstands partial shade and shade.
To create conditions close to natural conditions for the plants, they should be planted only in light, sandy soils, without stagnant moisture. If the soil in your garden is clayey and heavy, you should avoid these plants. Good drainage is a prerequisite. Planting should be carried out in deep holes (three times the height of the bulb), and at a distance from each other at least twice their average diameter (according to the rule "one yes, two no"). In this case, the planting depth and distance between plants should be about 8 cm.

How to Plant - Iris hollandica Silvery Beauty
Guide and tips for planting Iris Perennials Bare-Root Plants
-
Prepare the soil: Iris plants prefer well-drained soil with a pH level of 6.0 to 7.0. Amend the soil with compost or organic matter to improve the soil's fertility and drainage.
-
Choose the planting location: Select a spot that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Avoid planting in areas with standing water or where the soil remains soggy after rainfall.
-
Dig a hole: Dig a hole deep enough to accommodate the roots of the plant. The hole should be shallow, only about 4 cm deep, and wide enough to spread the roots out.
-
Place the bare-root plant in the hole: Gently spread the roots out and place the plant in the hole. The top of the rhizome, the thickened root-like stem, should be visible above the soil surface. Backfill the hole with soil and press down firmly to eliminate air pockets.
-
Water the plant: Give the plant a thorough watering after planting to settle the soil around the roots. Continue to water the plant regularly to keep the soil evenly moist until the plant becomes established.
-
Mulch the plant: Add a layer of organic mulch around the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the base of the plant to prevent rot.
-
Monitor the plant: Keep an eye on the plant's growth and water it regularly as needed. Iris plants generally bloom in late spring to early summer and benefit from occasional fertilization throughout the growing season.
