About Rose ‘Gallica Officinalis’ – The Apothecary’s Rose
Rose ‘Gallica Officinalis’, commonly known as the Apothecary’s Rose, is one of the oldest cultivated roses in Europe. The semi-double blooms display rich pink to crimson tones and surround a centre of golden stamens that attract pollinators. Historically grown for medicinal and aromatic purposes, this variety remains highly valued for its cultural significance and timeless beauty. The flowers appear in abundance during early summer and fill the garden with a rich, classic rose fragrance. Its upright, suckering growth habit allows it to form attractive flowering colonies over time.
How to Plant Rose ‘Gallica Officinalis’?
Plant in a sunny or lightly shaded location with fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Allow spacing of 120–180 cm between plants and provide room for natural spreading. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain moderate moisture during establishment. Apply mulch annually to improve soil fertility and retain moisture. Light pruning after flowering is sufficient to keep the shrub healthy and well-shaped.
