Gooseberry Hinnonmaki Red

Gooseberry 'Hinnomaki Red' (Ribes uva-crispa) is a hardy, Finnish-bred cultivar prized for its heavy crops of large, ruby-red to dark maroon berries with a tangy outer skin and sweet, juicy flesh. Renowned for its exceptional flavor, these medium-sized berries are perfect for fresh eating, jams, jellies, pies, or preserves, offering a delightful balance of tart and sweet. The compact, upright shrub features grape-like, dark green foliage that turns vibrant red in fall, adding ornamental appeal to gardens.

This variety grows to a height of 90–120 cm (3–4 feet) with a spread of 90–150 cm (3–5 feet) and produces fruit in mid-summer (July). Self-fertile and mildew-resistant, it’s low-maintenance and hardy in USDA Zones 3–7, withstanding temperatures as low as -40°F (-40°C). Netting is recommended to protect berries from birds.
